Areas of Learning
At East Sheen we foster the idea that all children are able and eager to learn and that it depends on each unique child having opportunities to interact in positive relationships and be provided with an enabling environment for learning and development to take place.
We aim for each individual child to be a happy, confident, motivated and resilient learner.
In Reception we support all children’s development by ensuring challenging yet playful learning opportunities in the prime and specific areas of learning:
Prime areas of learning:
Personal, social and emotional development
Communication and language
These three prime areas are extended and developed through the specific areas.
Specific areas of learning:
Understanding the World
Expressive arts and design
These seven areas of learning are covered every day through focused teaching and independent play based activities and investigations. The children have the opportunity to join in these activities both inside and in the outdoor environment and are given time to explore their self-initiated learning in depth.
The class teachers deliver daily whole class lessons. Each week there are regular phonics, reading and number sessions in addition to topic, art and music activities. During the week we have two P.E. lessons, one in the hall and one taught outside by NSS sports coaches. We attend weekly singing sessions taught by the singing teacher Miss Reed. There is a special circle time each week for personal, social and emotional topics including ‘Show and Tell’ and to celebrate individual children’s achievements. Listening to stories is a favourite activity at any time of the day and we enjoy a sing song too.
