Class Representatives
Each class at the school is supported by a small team of Class Reps who act as the vital link between parents and teachers. They are not a barrier to communication, but rather facilitators, ensuring that information flows smoothly between the school and parents. Class Reps do not represent individual concerns but work to maintain a community-focused dialogue.
Being a Class Rep is a fulfilling and important role. They help foster a strong sense of community amongst class parents while serving as a conduit for communication between parents, teachers, and the PTA.
What Does a Class Rep Do?
Class Reps are typically:
-
Coordinate Fundraising Activities: They work alongside the school’s Class Rep Coordinators to organise fundraising events such as the Christmas and Summer fairs, cake sales, and other school social events. This includes managing the stall preparation, coordinating a rota of volunteers, overseeing the event, and providing feedback afterward.
-
Organise Volunteer Rotas: They help organise a schedule for parents to assist in classroom activities, including art projects, reading sessions, and other educational initiatives.
-
Manage Cake Sales: Class Reps organise cake sales to raise money for their class, ensuring all funds go directly toward benefiting the class.
-
Host Social Events for Parents: From coffee mornings to end-of-year parties, Class Reps organise social activities that encourage parent interaction and build a supportive team spirit within the class.
-
Attend PTA Meetings: Class Reps attend the Annual General Meeting (AGM) once a year and three PTA committee meetings annually to stay informed and represent the class’s interests.
-
Maintain Class Lists: They help create and manage class lists, which are a helpful resource for parents to organise parties, play dates, or even emergency school-run assistance. These lists are especially valuable for working parents who might not meet others in the playground. Each year, parents re-confirm their details via a Class List Update Form available from the Rep Coordinators.
-
Communicate Class Feedback: Class Reps gather feedback from parents and share it with the school’s leadership team through the Class Rep Forum. If the issue relates to the PTA, they relay concerns or suggestions to the Co-chairs.
-
Organise Gifts: Class Reps often coordinate collections for teacher and teaching assistant gifts, such as for Christmas or end-of-year presents. They may also organise cards or messages from the children.
-
Coordinate Leaving Gifts: When children leave the school, Class Reps may organise cards or gifts to bid them farewell.
-
Find a Successor: Toward the end of the year, Class Reps are responsible for identifying a new volunteer to take over the role for the following year, ensuring the continuity of the class community.
