Music

Subject Vision

At East Sheen Primary School, music is an important part of school life. It supports our vision of developing creativity and confidence in every child, while reflecting our Thinking School values of collaboration and curiosity. Specialist music teaching ensures high-quality learning and inspires pupils to enjoy performing, composing and responding to music with confidence. Singing and music-making help to build a strong sense of community, wellbeing and shared achievement. Our Gold Sing Up School status reflects our commitment to embedding music across the curriculum and fostering a lifelong love of music.

Implementation

Music at East Sheen Primary School is designed to enable children to develop the skills required to become confident performers who enjoy expressing themselves through music. Our music curriculum (adapted from Sing Up) supports the skills and knowledge objectives set out in the National Curriculum.

In Reception, children have access to high quality music resources and are encouraged to explore sounds and create their own music. Songs are taught to support children’s understanding of different topics while rhymes support their number and letter knowledge.

In KS1, music is taught as a discrete subject by class teachers. It is also used across the curriculum to help children embed knowledge through song.

In KS2, music is taught by a specialist music teacher. Children deepen their musical knowledge and understanding with opportunities to learn to play a range of instruments in our dedicated music room.

Across the school, children perform regularly to their peers and parents in various assemblies and celebrations. Weekly key stage singing lessons allow children to sing together and widen their repertoire through the song of the week. Our school choir performs regularly at singing festivals across the borough and beyond.

Impact

Music has a significant impact on pupils at East Sheen Primary School, fostering confidence, wellbeing, creativity and a strong sense of community. Children enjoy music and participate enthusiastically in whole-school singing, performances and musical productions. By the end of Year 6, many pupils perform confidently as ensemble members or soloists, demonstrating the skills and self-assurance developed throughout their time at the school. Pupils learn to listen critically, respond thoughtfully to a wide range of musical genres, and create and perform their own compositions. Many also choose to continue their musical journey through instrumental tuition with Richmond Music Trust, performing regularly in assemblies, concerts and wider community events. Our commitment to singing and music-making contributes positively to pupils’ wellbeing and sense of belonging, helping to create a vibrant musical culture across the school.
